Private Sector Partnerships

The complex health challenges that developing countries face require the cooperation of governments, non-profits, NGOs, and the private sector.  The Axios Foundation is committed to partnerships with the private sector, and has joined with a number of major pharmaceutical companies to enable efficient and effective donations of drugs and other medical products to patients in need in low- and middle-income countries.

Drug Donation Programs

Axios manages global and international drug and medical product donation programs through its subsidiary, Axios Healthcare Development (AHD). AHD handles all aspects of donation management, including identification of partner institutions or NGOs in target countries and logistics of international shipment and distribution to ensure that donated product reaches eligible patients or recipients reliably and cost-effectively. AHD is a U.S. public charity thus allowing donor companies to obtain the full benefit of US tax incentives for their donations.

Drug Access Programs

We work in collaboration with our private sector affiliate, Axios International, to implement local capacity- driven donation programs and shared-payment access strategies that allow private companies, local institutions and patients to share the cost-burden of medical interventions.  Such programs have been designed and/or implemented in more than 100 countries on behalf of corporate partners such as Pfizer, Merck, Novartis, Bristol-Myers Squibb, GlaxoSmithKline, Roche, Boehringer Ingelheim, Sanofi-Aventis, Eisai and AstraZeneca.

Breast Cancer Care

Axios partnered with AstraZeneca and the Tikur Anbessa Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia with the aim of making the hospital a center of excellence for breast cancer management and treatment. Worldwide, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in women; however in low- and middle-income countries, where diagnostic and treatment services are limited and most patients are first seen when the disease is advanced, the incidence of breast cancer is growing by up to 5 percent per year. Together with the Ethiopian Breast Cancer Association, Axios developed a plan for a six-year project to strengthen breast cancer management and treatment, and raise awareness. The project has since been handed over to local stakeholders for their continued management.
